Las Escuelas de Derecho de las Universidades de Ottawa y de Puerto Rico han convenido un exclusivo programa de intercambio en el cual se le ofrece a los estudiantes puertorriqueños la oportunidad de estudiar en Canadá por un semestre. Dicho intercambio le brindará al estudiante la oportunidad única de aprender y entender el sistema legal canadiense.

Son 3 semanas: 1 semana en Ottawa y 2 en Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Exchange: Feminist Legal Issues This course is designed to explore a cross-section of legal issues with a focus on gender, class, and race discrimination. This course is designed to explore a cross-section of legal issues with a focus on gender, class, and race discrimination.  The assigned reading will be composed of books and articles from Canadian, American, and Puerto Rican authors, including Constance Backhouse Petticoats and Prejudice: Women and Law in Nineteenth-Century Canada; Sonia Sotomayor My Beloved World; Jane Doe The Story of Jane Doe; Brian Valee Life with Billy; and Christine Stark and Rebecca Whisnant Not for Sale: Feminists Resisting Prostitution and Pornography.  The classroom discussions will be structured around the readings.  The method of evaluation is student journals.

Mayte Title: Courts, Gender and Access to Justice

The main objective of the course is to analyze the complex relations between courts, gender, and access to justice. The course will explore the multiple ways in which these three concepts intersect and impact the rights and lives of women and LGBTQI+ persons. Topics such as the following will be discussed: feminist legal theory; gender and the history of the legal profession; gender and the design and structure of courts; judicial approaches to cases involving gender issues or how have courts understood gender; judicial approaches to gender based violence; litigation costs and the feminization of poverty; the development of specialized court programs that seek to address the needs of vulnerable groups; explicit and implicit biases and the adjudication process; gender-sensitive adjudication; intersectionality-sensitive adjudication; discriminatory behavior of judges and lawyers as unethical conduct; competent representation; among other topics.
