The authors examine the root of the access to justice problem in Puerto Rico and how this access has diminished even more so due to the financial crisis. They then explore the different organizations which provide legal aid in Puerto Rico and finally they propose several strategies to improve the access to justice on the Island. These strategies include, amongst others, to improve the pro bono culture in the island’s law firms and in the different law schools, increase the assistance provided to pro se litigants and facilitate access to justice through technology. The authors conclude that the first step towards achieving a more equitable access to justice requires the education of both the public and the lawyered class about how to tackle these issues within the coming years.
Los autores examinan la raíz del problema de acceso a la justicia en Puerto Rico y cómo este acceso ha disminuido aún más con la crisis fiscal. Luego pasan a explorar las diferentes organizaciones que proveen asistencia legal en Puerto Rico y finalmente proponen estrategias sobre cómo mejorar el acceso a la justicia en la Isla. Estas estrategias incluyen, entre otras, mejorar la cultura pro bono en los bufetes de abogados y en las diferentes escuelas de Derecho, aumentar la asistencia que se le da a los litigantes pro se y facilitar el acceso a la justicia a través de la tecnología. Los autores concluyen que el primer paso hacia un acceso más equitativo requiere educar tanto al público como a la clase togada sobre la urgencia con que se deben atender los temas de acceso a la justicia en los próximos años.
