English version (Español)

October 22, 2020

The University of Puerto Rico School of Law and its Pro Bono Program are joining the celebration of the
Pro Bono Week that runs 25-31 October 2020. This celebration was instituted by the American Bar
Association and is embraced by numerous organizations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico,
in the case of the University of Puerto Rico School of Law is dubbed Facing the Challenge: Pro bono
response to extreme events.

More than 20 topics relevant to the living conditions in Puerto Rico are addressed by the voluntary work
of more than 200 law students. Since their first year in Law School these students learn and acknowledge
the importance of democratizing legal education that makes possible access to justice, at the same time
that cultivates appreciation and adherence to Canon I of Professional Ethics that provides for the
responsibility of rendering free legal services to the population with scarce resources.

The programmed activities include talks, workshops and panels; sixteen activities that highlight the
importance of pro-bono work in times when challenges like the ones we live in require helping defenseless
people and strengthening each other. The topics address needs that have been uncovered since Hurricane
María, the constant earthquakes in the Southwest part of the Island and the Covid-19 pandemic that still
afflicts us. Within these we address issues of housing, health, employment, and gender violence, among
others.

We encourage you to see the schedule of activities on our FaceBook page. We will appreciate you “like”
and “share” so that more people can benefit from this information.
